Local trucks can now cross Hoover Dam, closed to truck traffic since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, but long-haul truckers still must take a long, winding detour.

Although local trucks, tour buses and RVs are being allowed to cross the dam, all vehicles are being stopped and inspected at police checkpoints on U.S. 93 on the Arizona and Nevada sides of the dam. Vehicles carrying flammable or hazardous materials are turned away, along with tankers and commercial trucks that cannot be inspected.
Long-haul trucks continue to be detoured south, crossing the Colorado River on U.S. 95 between Laughlin and Bullhead City, Arizona. Dam officials expect the detour to remain in place "at least for a couple of years."
Work is being accelerated to build a new U.S. 93 bypass bridge over the Colorado River south of the dam. Federal officials had planned to finish the bridge by 2007, but are now aiming for 2005.
