While other parts of the country enjoy a mild winter, a series of whiteouts and blizzards along Interstate 84 in northeast Oregon has made this winter the worst in six years.

According to the Associated Press, the 10-mile Ladd Canyon pass not only has some of Oregon's worst winter weather, but also has the highest ratio of trucks to cars in the state.
The Oregon Department of Transportation has closed the pass seven times since Thanksgiving, the highest number since the mid-1990s. It has at times been closed for as long as 15 hours, and more than once the highway has been closed for 160 miles.
The canyon creates a wind-tunnel effect during the winter, transforming an ordinary winter storm into a raging blizzard. Wet pavement can turn to black ice in minutes.
