Comcar Industries of Auburndale, Fla., is installing Eaton VORAD EVT-300 Collision Warning Systems in its entire fleet of more than 4,000 tractors.
Comcar said it decided to standardize on the VORAD units after testing the units in several trucks for more than a year and seeing a significant drop in the number of accidents.
"We have installed VORAD units in 1,950 of our tractors to date and we hope to have our entire fleet installed within 18 months," said Billy Ready, Comcar Industries general counsel. "Every new truck we order will be installed with VORAD."
"Our tests have shown that the VORAD units can reduce both the frequency and severity of accidents," Ready said. "We also have had great acceptance by our drivers. The VORAD units improve their overall awareness of what's going on ahead and beside them as they drive. The number of front-end and lane-change accidents have been reduced because the drivers are getting that important extra warning."
The Eaton VORAD EVT-300 Collision Warning System includes both forward and side radar sensors operating at 24.725 GHz to detect objects and vehicles. In-cab display units with a series of warning lights and audible tones are used to warn the driver of the presence of these objects and vehicles and give the driver added time to take any necessary action.
Comcar Industries has more than 50 terminals around the country and several separate fleets, including Coastal Transport, a flatbed carrier based in Savannah, Ga., Commercial Carrier Corp., a short-haul fleet focusing on construction materials based in Auburndale, Fla., CTL Distribution, a bulk carrier based in Mulberry, Fla., MD Transport Systems, a general freight hauler based in Auburndale, Midwest Coast Transport, a 48-state truckload carrier based in Sioux Falls, S.D., and Willis Shaw Express, a large hauler of temperature-sensitive freight based in Elm Springs, Ark.
