Overweight Trucks Detoured On U.S. 26 in Oregon

Trucks over 80,000 pounds are being detoured around a bridge on U.S. 26, also known as the John Day Highway, between Mt. Vernon and John Day.

The Coles Bridge over the John Day River next to the Clyde Holiday State Park is located at mile point 155.75. Stress cracks in the 48-year-old bridge have led the state DOT to restrict overweight loads until repairs are completed. Currently there is no estimated date for repairs to be finished.
For overweight trucks traveling southbound on U.S. 395, turn left (east) at Ritter Junction (mile point 77.3) onto Susanville Road (county road #20). Continue until it ends at the junction of Oregon Route 7, mile point 1.13. Turn right (south) and take Route 7 until it connects to U.S. 26 at Austin Junction. Turn right onto U.S. 26 toward John Day.
For trucks traveling eastbound on U.S. 26, exit at Dayville, mile point 131.13. Turn right (south) onto the South Fork John Day River Road. This road becomes gravel for 32 miles. Continue to the Izee Junction, then turn left (west) onto county road #63 towards U.S. 395. At U.S. 395, mile point 17.75, turn left (north) towards Canyon City and John Day. In John Day, turn right (east) onto U.S. 26.
