A three-truck crash that damaged a bridge on Interstate 80 near Denville, N.J., will mean delays for weeks or even months.

A tanker truck carrying 3,200 gallons of gasoline and two other trucks crashed on the westbound highway Friday. The resulting fire was so hot it cracked the concrete support beams and officials closed the bridge.
A temporary bridge should be completed this week, but it will be only two lanes, rather than the original five, and the speed limit will be reduced. Because I-80 is a major artery out of the New York City area and normally carries 125,000 to 130,000 vehicles a day, this is bound to mean delays. A permanent replacement bridge could take eight to 12 weeks, according to published reports.
As construction workers built the temporary bridge Monday, detours took vehicles around a 4-mile stretch of the Interstate, between Exits 42 and 39, with the primary detour on Route 46.
