The company will continue to offer such services to customers and will continue all other operations of the specialized division.
The change by the Wisconsin-based carrier affects a fleet of about 250 owner-operators. The company is moving the business to its non-asset based brokerage operations.
"We hope to move a majority of these owner-operators into other growth areas for the company, specifically the van and bulk divisions,” said Schneider Corporate Council Charlotte Klenke. Owner-operators not wishing to make the transition are being offered the opportunity to work with Schneider Specialized through its brokerage division. She said the company will continue flatbed operations through its brokerage, glass and dedicated divisions.
The slowdown in the economy has affected freight levels for many flatbed and specialized carriers.
Schneider National acquired the specialized division in 1985 as part of a purchase of another carrier. It previously provided some specialized services through its brokerage operations.
