In an effort to get trucks from the Port of Seattle to Interstates 5 and 90, a new route will be built from the waterfront to the Interstates.

According to the Seattle Times, an elevated highway scheduled to be finished by the end of 2003 will take container haulers and other drivers over train tracks and surface streets, right past the south edge of Safeco Field.
The work is being done through a program known as FAST, or Freight Action Strategy. Nearly a dozen federal, state, local and private groups took part in designing and funding FAST improvements, including transportation agencies, the port, a railroad and stadium operators, according to the paper.
The first phase, for which a groundbreaking ceremony was held last week, will carry traffic eastbound from the port to the freeways. A second, westbound phase has not yet been funded.
