A five-year improvement program begins this month on Interstate 15 between Los Angeles and the Las Vegas area.

The first part of the project will add a third lane in each direction from Baker, Calif., to just south of the California-Nevada state line. Two other projects will widen the road to Barstow, Calif. On the Nevada side, construction will begin this summer on widening southbound I-15 from south of Sloan to Primm at the state line.
Officials from both states' Departments of Transportation are working on ways to minimize traffic tie-ups due to the construction. The goal will be to keep at least two lanes open at all times, but there will still be times when only one lane will be open. One option is to work on construction at night.
