Speed Limits on Milwaukee Highway Drop to 45 mph

In a move to ease congestion and reduce truck traffic near a construction site, speed limits on a 7.5-mile stretch of Highway 164 in Milwaukee, Wis., will be temporarily reduced from 55 mph to 45 mph.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, state transportation officials are hoping reduced speeds will discourage the diversion of southbound truck traffic from U.S. Highways 41/45 to 164 during resurfacing work this summer on both highways.
Signs are posted on the highway near a section of the road between Highway 175 and Capitol Drive. The speed limits will go back to normal on November 30.
The repaving of a section of Highway 164 from County Line Road north to Highway 175 will begin in early August and will be finished in late October, said Mike O'Brien, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation district office. Resurfacing of the southbound lanes of 41/45 between County Line Road and Lincoln Ave. in West Allis, which began in spring, will be complete in September.
Earlier this year, area officials asked the DOT to permanently reduce Highway 164's speed limit to 45 mph, but the state rejected the request.
The $1.2 million Highway 164 resurfacing project will include several minor safety improvements, including a second northbound lane at county Highway E. The shoulders of several intersections will also be paved.
