The North Carolina Department of Transportation has introduced a system that offers real-time information on all incidents affecting highway travel across the state.

Known as the Traveler Information Management System, or TIMS, the new system is the latest addition to NCSmartlink, the department's headquarters for its intelligent transportation systems efforts. TIMS offers information from one system located at the NCDOT’s web site, www.dot.state.nc.us.
Incidents ranging from construction activities to vehicle crashes will be entered into the system by NCDOT field personnel and will be prioritized by high, medium or low impacts to traffic. Citizens can query the system by route or county to learn of incidents affecting area travel. TIMS also includes a special alert feature, which will be used to post critical travel advisories for statewide or regional road conditions during adverse weather or in the event of a major accident.
