Vermont is installing rumble strips along all 320 miles of interstate.
The bands of rough pavement are designed to alert drivers who cross over out of the travel lane with a loud hum and vibrations.
The Vermont Agency of Transportation reports that in 1998, fatigue and drivers falling asleep at the wheel caused 57 of 926 accidents on state highways, according to an Associated Press report.
Many states, including New Hampshire and New York, already have rumble strips along interstate highways.
