Florida Fires Close Highway, Continue to Spread
June 02, 2000
Smoke from wildfires in Florida billowed across the state last week causing a series of accidents that closed a major north-south interstate.
According to a report from the Associated Press, one person was killed in one of five crashes on Interstate 95, which follows the state's eastern coastline.
Drought has left much of Florida extremely susceptible to fire. Firefighters finished work last week on 78 fires around the state and were monitoring another 146 contained fires to make sure they remained behind fire lines.
"This is going to be screwed up for some time," said Lt. Chuck Williams, a Florida Highway Patrol spokesman.
