Commercial vehicles will start paying a dollar more next month to cross the four Delaware River bridges between New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

The toll increase is scheduled to go into effect when the E-Z Pass electronic toll system begins operation Dec. 18. Initially, only commercial vehicles will pay the higher toll on the Benjamin Franklin, Walt Whitman, Betsy Ross and Commodore Barry bridges.
The Delaware River Port Authority is the seventh agency in the Northeast to implement the electronic toll system, which lets users pay without stopping. The agency says the new system will drastically improve the traffic flow on the four bridges.
The port authority says it needs the toll increase to fund $756 million in construction projects over the next five years, including stripping and repainting the Ben Franklin Bridge.
