Cannon Express, a medium-haul carrier based in Springdale, AR, announced a significant pay increase for its drivers Tuesday.

Effective Jan. 1, 2000, starting pay for drivers with six months or less of experience will be 28 cents per mile. For six months to 1 year of experience, it will be 29 cents per mile. One to two years, 30 cents; two to three years, 31 cents; three to four years, 32 cents; four to five years, 33 cents; and five years or more, 34 cents.
The pay will be increased by one-half cent per mile every six months as long as the driver is employed with the company, up to a maximum of 39 cents per mile.
Each driver will also be eligible for an annual safety bonus of $1,000 each December if they have not had a chargeable accident during the year. New drivers will have their first bonus pro-rated for the number of months employed.
