Oct. 8 – Hurricane Georges, which prompted the largest evacuation in Gulf Coast history, may help people who want to upgrade U.S. Route 90 in Louisiana to extend I-49 to New Orleans.
During the evacuation, water covered one of the two eastbound lanes of U.S. 90 near Raceland, LA. And at Amelia, the highway narrows to two lanes. Other exit routes, such as I-10, I-12 and I-44, were packed with bumper-to-bumper traffic.
The estimated cost of turning U.S. 90 South into I-49 South is at least $655 million.
