About 40 trucks competed in the truck beauty competition at Newport Communications’ Truckerfest August 13-15 at The Alamo Travel Plaza in Reno, NV.
Brad Vandyke from Tangent, OR, of George Vandyke Trucking, took home the trophy for Best of Show (bobtail) with his light green 1995 Peterbilt 379. Vandyke also won first place for a 1990 or newer conventional bobtail and for best engine.
Richie Hamann of Geo. Golding Inc. in Lockport, NY, won Best of Show (combination) for the 1996 Kenworth W900L “American Pride.” Hamann’s rig also took first price for lights on a combination and for custom company truck combination.
The show, sponsored by Alcoa, was sanctioned by the National Association of Show Trucks, and is one of five shows this year that awards winners points toward NAST’s annual grand trophy from Truck-Lite. It was part of Truckerfest, which also included free steak dinners, exhibits, makeovers, games, contests and prizes for truckers.
“It was one of the best truck shows I’ve ever been to,” says Bob Guy, president of NAST. “After the fireworks display Saturday night, a truck driver came up to me who was stuck there for the weekend and said it made him proud to be at truck driver. And that’s what it’s all about.”
