80-mph Speed Limit Coming to Nearly 500 Miles of Wyoming Roadways

Truck drivers and car drivers, along with anyone in between, will soon be able to legally drive up to 80 mph on 488 miles of rural interstate highway in Wyoming.

Bill Would Set National Liability Standard for Shippers, Brokers

Several House Republicans are proposing a national standard to protect buyers of trucking services from claims that they were negligent when selecting the carrier. The bill by Rep. John Duncan, R-Tenn., says that shippers and brokers would not be liable for negligence claims at the state level if they made sure that the carrier is registered at the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, has the required insurance and does not have an unsatisfactory safety rating.

Work on the highway bill continues next week with a Senate Commerce Committee hearing on safety policy. The Subcommittee on Surface Transportation will convene Tuesday, June 3 to take testimony on “The Safety and Effectiveness of our Transportation Systems.” Witnesses have not yet been named.

$4.1 Verdict Against R&L Carriers in Texas Crash

A 41-year-old Mississippi woman, seriously injured when her pick-up truck rolled over, after it was rear-ended by an 18-wheel tractor-trailer driver on a Texas interstate highway in 2011, was awarded $4.1 million by a Dallas, Texas jury.

Sen. Durbin Seeks Review of FMCSA Investigative Practices

Sen. Dick Durban, D-Ill., asked the Transportation Department’s Inspector General to review the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s investigative practices. The agency dropped the ball on an investigation of a carrier that later was involved in a fatal crash, Durbin said in his April 9 letter to IG Calvin Scovel.
