Obama Taps Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx for Top DOT Post

President Obama nominated Anthony Foxx, the mayor of Charlotte, N.C., to replace Ray LaHood as Secretary of Transportation. Foxx does not have a background in transportation – he was a practicing attorney before going into politics – but as mayor he has been instrumental in a number of important transportation projects.

Phony Letters Being Sent to Motor Carriers

Another round of fraudulent U.S. DOT letters is being distributed, largely by fax, to motor carrier officials in an attempt to obtain banking information from the targeted carriers, warn the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the U.S. Transportation Department’s Office of Inspector General.

FMCSA Announces Steps to Reduce GPS-Caused Bridge Strikes

Sen. Charles Schumer and FMCSA Administrator Ann Ferro stand at the Eagle Avenue overpass in New York, which spans the Southern State Parkway at exit 18. The overpass has been struck at least 27 times by trucks that are prohibited from driving on the parkway.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration will begin issuing official recommendations to members of the commercial trucking industry on the proper uses of Global Positioning System navigation devices and incorporate GPS training into new entry-level certification programs for commercial motor vehicle operators.

DOT Moving Ahead with MAP-21 Freight Initiatives

The new National Freight Strategic Plan will look at different transportation modes.

The Department of Transportation is asking for nominations for a committee that will establish the National Freight Strategic Plan that's called for in last year's highway bill, and has proposed a process for desgnating a national freight network.
