Class 8 net orders started 2014 with a high-side surprise, up 9% month-over-month and 51% year-over-year. Classes 5-7 also got off to a good start with orders up 14% month-over-month and 33% year-over-year.

Sixty-two percent of the fleet executives responding to the Q1 2014 Fleet Sentiment survey conducted by CK Commercial Vehicle Research in January indicated they planned to place orders for Class 8 trucks in the next three months.

After a high-side surprise in October, Class 8 orders provided some low-side disappointment in November. For the month, new and net orders were 22,231 and 21,255 units, respectively.

FTR and ACT Research released preliminary data showing October Class 8 net orders were up for October. FTR reported that Class 8 preliminary orders rose 39% from September to 25,960 units.

September is typically the second weakest order month of the year for Class 8, so modest activity was expected, reports ACT Research. Class 8 net orders were 19,018 units, and there also was a spike in cancellations.

As expected from the preliminary report, August was a good month for Classes 5-8 orders. However, the absence of sustained economic strength remains a limitation for Class 8 demand, and build expectations have been sharply curtailed over the past two months.

August saw Class 8 orders rise to their highest level in three months with a preliminary reading of 19,500 units (+20%y/y). The August seasonal factor is the third lowest in 2013. When applied, August’s seasonally adjusted Class 8 order total rises to 22,000 units. The August SA reading represents the third best order month in the past 20.
