Photos: Volvo VNX Heavy Haul Tractor

As driven, the tractor pulled a loaded flatbed and the rig scaled at a modest 77,780 pounds.

Introduced last year, Volvo’s VNX heavy haul tractor combines the frame and high stance of the vocational VHD with the highway comfort of the VNL. The cab is outfitted like a VN, so drivers are well housed for runs longer than what the VHD might be dispatched on.

The VNX is rated at up to 200,000 pounds GCW, but the one recently driven by Senior Editor Tom Berg was capped at 125,000 because of its transmission, the I-Shift automated mechanical, with which application engineers are being careful in approving.

The full road test article will appear in the June issue of Heavy Duty Trucking and will be posted on TruckingInfo.com shortly after.

Visions of Future Trucks

The huge IAA commercial truck show in Hanover, Germany, in 2012, included this eye magnet, the "aerodynamically optimized road train" from MAN and Krone, both prominent vehicle builders in Europe.

In our December issue, we talked to truck makers about what we can expect on commercial trucks in the next five to 10 years. For this photo gallery we compiled real concept trucks and those just on paper.

How a Volvo VN is Built

14. At a point where the two assembly lines merge, the cab is hoisted in the air and set gently down on the frame and is bolted in place. Electrical, air and liquid fittings are connected as the cab becomes one with the chassis.

Equipment Editor Jim Park takes us on a tour of Volvo Trucks North America's New River Valley truck assembly plant in Dublin, Va. Shown are a few key steps in the assembly process, from welding the cab together to the finished product driving off the assembly line under its own power.

Volvo Trucks at MATS 2013

At the core of the new VNX heavy-haul and vocational tractor is a Volvo integrated powertrain featuring a newly introduced D16 engine with 600 horsepower, 2,050 pounds-feet of torque and I-Shift automated manual transmission.

Volvo made news at the 2013 Mid-America Trucking Show by making its automated I-Shift transmission standard on trucks with Volvo engines and by making good on its promise to go more aggressively after the vocational market with a new heavy-haul model, among other announcements.
