Strick Trailers has recalled certain model-year 1998-2005 dry van trailers because their rear impact guards might not be strong enough to prevent a vehicle from traveling under the trailer in a crash.

The trailers were manufactured from April 19, 1998 to Jan. 17, 2005 with rear impact guards that use gussets 46829 and 46830. The recall could affect as many as 2,179 trailers.

Because the impact guards might not prevent an underride in an accident, the trailers fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 223, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.

Strick will notify owners, and service centers will install reinforcements to the rear impact guards free of charge. The recall is expected to begin next month.

Owners may contact Strick customer service at 1-704-436-2590 or contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or go to www.safercar.gov.
