The trailers will reportedly be used to move cargo between the company’s fulfillment centers, delivery stations and sorting facilities rather than for shipping directly to customers, according to CNET. Amazon will only own the trailers and the goods will be transported by third-party trucking companies.
Amazon will continue to use its shipping partners for doorstep delivery including the U.S. Postal Service, UPS and FedEx, as well as a network of smaller carriers.
In recent years, the retail giant has made moves to increase its own capacity to deliver goods and Amazon has used its own fleet of vehicles for delivery in limited cases like the Amazon Fresh grocery service.
