Help Inc., which offers the voluntary PrePass weigh station bypass service, is testing the Federal Highway Administration’s SAFER (Safety And Fitness Electronic Records) program. Using interactive technology, SAFER is designed to improve access to the nationwide database of interstate motor carrier safety data.
Currently, the PrePass Service Center receives and stores critical safety data for each carrier enrolled in PrePass on a CD-Rom that is updated periodically. The new system would provide direct access to FHWA’s Motor Carrier Management Information System for easier and more frequent verification of carrier safety history.The test will include features such as end-user use of Graphic User Interface, weekly download of HELP carrier data and ad-hoc queries of safety “snapshots.”
