In a unanimous vote, the Senate Transportation Committee approved legislation designed to promote the use of clean fuels in heavy duty vehicles. Senate Bill 1096 creates tax incentives for trucking companies to convert their fleets to clean fuels and for the construction of refueling stations to support them.
Spokesmen say California has more than 250,000 heavy duty trucks, which represent only 8% of the total number of vehicles in the state but which create nearly 70% of the vehicle emission pollutants. Senator Jim Brulte (R-Rancho Cucamonga), who introduced the bill, says that the legislation would benefit all Californians in the form of reduced emissions, cleaner air and a more competitive trucking industry.
The bill now moves to the Senate Revenue and Taxation Committee for consideration.
