Worldwide trucker protests over high fuel prices have spread to South America, where hundreds of truckers in Peru are blocking highways in a national strike to demand lower fuel taxes.

According to published reports, Saturday was the fifth day in the strike, which is causing shortages of fuel and food as truckers blockade highways.
With fuel prices skyrocketing, the truckers want the government to eliminate a fuel tax that is as high as 34%. They also want lower highway tolls.
The government, which is already facing political upheaval, says the measures demanded by the truckers would upset its austerity drive.
