Western Star Trucks is reportedly cutting production at its Canadian Kelowna, British Columbia, plant from 25 to 20 trucks a day and will reduce its workforce by 200.
According to The Toronto Star, the company also plans to add a third week to its regular two-week summer factory shutdown in July.
A total of 150 hourly employees and 50 office workers will leave through layoffs and attrition, the newspaper reported. That will put Western Star's workforce at 1,126, the lowest in three years.
This is the second reduction for Western Star this year. The plant was closed in April for two weeks and production reduced from 31 to 25 trucks a day. The company also builds three truck a day at its North Charleston, S.C., plant opened earlier this year.
Western Star blames an industry-wide reduction in demand for Class 8 trucks, noting that "all heavy truck manufacturers in North America are reducing their build rates."
