DaimlerChrysler will consider any attractive deal to buy or ally with an Asian truck manufacturer but, if nothing turns up, it will tackle the market on its own, CEO Juergen Schrempp reportedly told an Asian newspaper.
The company announced Monday that it will acquire a 34% stake in Mitsubishi Motors, but that union doesn't include trucks. Mitsubishi and Sweden's AB Volvo have already agreed to a truck partnership in Asia.
Schrempp said they have no interest in Nissan Diesel, noting that the truckmaker already partners with Renault.
He acknowledged that entering the Asian market on its own will take a bit longer, "but it's less risky." He also emphasized that DaimlerChrysler starts from a strong position as the number one truck maker in Europe and the Americas.
