With a record 4,500 blood units collected this year for the American Red Cross, NATSO member truckstop/travel plazas have topped the 25,000 unit mark since the inception of the "Drive To Save Lives" program six years ago.

"As we begin the year 2000, we face many new challenges -- but the need for blood remains the same and even increases around the holidays," said Jacquelyn Fredrick, chief operating officer of American Red Cross Blood Services. "To all who volunteered and donated blood during this drive, we extend our warmest thanks and appreciation for your gift of life."
According to the American Red Cross, each pint of blood may benefit three lives. That means that as many as 13,500 patients across the country could be helped through this year's effort.
