More than 20 port truckers walked off the job last week at a trucking company in Houston, and Teamsters leaders say 1,000 more will stop working March 13.
Teamsters Local 988 says the port truckers will "shut the town down" unless the trucking companies do something about better rates and allowing the truckers to unionize.
The Teamsters have been staging rallies at ports around the country for the last month as they continue their efforts to get port truckers into the union. The problem is, as independent contractors, port truckers are not legally allowed to unionize.
A Feb. 14 rally in Houston drew more than 800 truck drivers. Many local trucking companies agreed to pay the drivers a fuel surcharge after the one-day demonstration.
