A new North Carolina web site will offer real-time video images of high-traffic portions of Interstate 40.

The site, www.ncsmartlink.org, uses some of the 120 traffic cameras installed on I-40 throughout high-traffic areas like the Triangle, Greensboro, Winston-Salem and Charlotte. Fiber-optic cables carry video images to regional transportation management centers, were local traffic engineers keep an eye out for accidents or other traffic problems. Now some of these same cameras are hooked up to the Internet so anyone can take a peek.
The site, which has been up for about a month, is still under development. To start with, the state put pictures from nine of the I-40 cameras on the site. The cameras closest to Raleigh were brought online first. Cameras in Winston-Salem will be next.
