A New Hampshire truckstop will pay $225,000 to settle a pollution lawsuit.

The septic system failed at the Travel Ports of America truckstop in Greenland, NH, in 1995. Thousands of gallons of raw sewage ended up in local waterways. The state sued the truckstop and the property owner, alleging that it never approved the truckstop's septic system.
As part of the settlement, the truckstop will connect to Portsmouth's sewage system. The truckstop and the property owner, Siegel Limited Partnership, will pay a $150,000 fine and give Portsmouth $50,000 for sewage system improvements. They also have to build a stormwater treatment system, which will cost another $25,000.
The truckstop is now operated by TravelCenters of America.
