As the Teamsters' unfair labor practices strike against less-than-truckload carrier Overnite Transportation passes the one-month mark, Overnite reopened another service center that had been closed due to the picketing.
Overnite's Rockford, IL, service center is the third facility to be reopened since four terminals were closed and their services consolidated into other nearby terminals. New Orleans and Little Rock have also been reopened. Only the Milwaukee terminal remains closed.
Although the Little Rock terminal has been reopened, local newspaper reports indicate there has been tension and some violence. Little Rock police were called to the terminal at least three times last week, according to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.
An Overnite driver says he was threatened by picketers, and the picketers say they were nearly run down by a pickup truck driven by a substitute driver for Overnite. Nails were scattered along the entrance, damaging a car tire of an employee who crossed the picket line. Picketers curse at drivers who cross the picket line.
Last week, Overnite reported an on-time service level of 97.5%, and says some 94% of its employees are still at work. Although the union says the strike has cost the company about 30% of its business, company officials say business has dropped only 5%.
