Independent truckers who haul containers in and out of the Baltimore Port are threatening to withhold their services beginning Sept. 1 unless they get higher pay; reduced delays in picking up and delivering containers; and better maintained and safer container chassis.

According to published reports, talks are continuing between truckers, steamship lines and port officials.
Truckers complain they are often cited for operating an unsafe vehicle because of the poor condition of container chassis, and since they don't own the chassis, they feel they are not responsible for their maintenance.
Similar work stoppages are under way at the ports of Seattle and Tacoma, WA, where about half of the 1,000 truckers have signed cards for Teamsters representation and about 200 are currently picketing.
