Tens of thousands of truckers in Brazil have shut down their trucks this week in protest of bad roads, high tolls and fuel prices.

Nelio Bothelo, spokesman for the Union of Brazilian Truckers, said the shutdown will last a week unless the government agrees to its demands. The list of demands includes the removal of corrupt highway police, and a higher limit for the number of points truckers can accumulate on their license before losing it.
The price of gas, which costs about $2.46 per gallon, is another sore point, as are tolls.
On Monday, there were reports of hundreds of trucks stopped along major highways. In some places, truckers left only one lane open for other traffic to pass through. In Sao Paulo state, hundreds of trucks caused a 7-mile traffic jam. Police said truckers were stoned in some areas when they tried to pass the blockades.
