Volvo Trucks Moves Forward With Focus on Brand, Uptime, Technology

The recent reorganization of Volvo Group along brand lines should be pretty seamless to North American customers in the short term, according to executives at a briefing for reporters Wednesday, but expect advances soon in powertrain technology and tests of connected vehicle technology and platooning.

A Volvo Group subsidiary is investing in Peloton Technology, which is working on a truck "platooning" system that would save fuel and reduce congestion by allowing trucks to travel in a close-following "platoon" on the highway.

AB Volvo’s board of directors has named a Scania executive, Martin Lundstedt, as the president and chief executive officer of the Volvo Group, replacing Olof Persson, who has led the group for almost four years but is out immediately. Volvo Group is the corporate parent of Volvo Trucks and Mack Trucks in North America.

Volvo Restructuring Truck Manufacturing in Europe

The plant in Umea will be further specialized in its main core business, including the painting of cabs.

The Volvo Group will restructure its truck-manufacturing activities in Europe over the next two years, improving efficiency and cutting its workforce, as it implements part of a new group-wide efficiency program.
