GAGGENAU, GERMANY -- Managers at Daimler's Gaggenau, Germany, powertrain facility Monday proudly showed off how they are building the new Detroit DT12 automated manual transmission, which will be assembled here until it moves to Detroit brand headquarters in Redford, Mich., in 2015.

Ford, GM to Jointly Develop Multi-Speed Transmissions

Ford and GM plan to jointly develop a new generation of advanced 9- and 10-speed automatics for cars, crossover and sport utility vehicles, and trucks.

Multi-speed transmissions were once reserved for heavy trucks, but 8-speed automatics are now available in automobiles and pickups, and soon there’ll be even more ratios.

Volvo Unveils New Heavy Haul Truck, Engine Ratings, Disc Brake, Suspension, More

Volvo's new VNX is designed for heavy haul and severe service vocational.

Volvo Trucks Thursday at the Mid-America Trucking Show introduced the VNX, a heavy-haul, high-performance model designed for extreme gross weight applications. The company also said it’s making the I-Shift the standard transmission on all trucks and made a number of other announcements.

Cummins, Eaton to Offer Integrated ‘Powertrain Package’

SmarTorque2 ISX15 mates with Fuller Advantage 10-speed automated mechanical transmission via special programming to “downspeed” cruising RPMs and yield high efficiency, the companies say.

Cummins Inc. and Eaton Corp. have devised a fuel-saving, integrated engine-transmission combination that will rival proprietary offerings from some truck builders.

Advantage 10-speed Transmissions to Use Less Lube Oil, Save 75 pounds, Eaton Says

Eaton Fuller Advantage 10-speed manual gearbox (shown) will enter production in September. An automated version is slated for next year’s first quarter.

A new series of Fuller Advantage manual and automated transmissions will cut weight and save fuel, Eaton’s Vehicle Group announced Thursday. The savings will offer a quick payback of the products’ “very small premium” in price over existing models.
