Western Star has broken the aerodynamic truck mold with a new angular, edgy and very slippery version of its classic configuration. The 5700XE boasts a very fuel efficient powertrain as well as some groundbreaking aero treatment that Western Star says will give any aero truck on the road today a real run for its money. Three years in the making, Western Star launched the 5700XE in Las Vegas.

Report: Natural Gas, Aerodynamics Will Help Meet Future Fuel Economy Goals

The report recommends that NHTSA and EPA develop a separate standard for natural gas vehicles, as is presently the case for diesel and gasoline-fueled vehicles.

Expanding the use of natural gas as a transportation fuel and greater use of aerodynamic devices on trailers are among the strategies recommended by a new National Research Council report for reducing fuel consumption by tractor-trailers, transit buses, commercial vehicles, trucks, and other medium and heavy-duty vehicles.

SmartTruck Refutes Recent Test Results

SmartTruck said a recent third-party computational fluid dynamics study conducted by CD-adapco showed SmartTruck’s UT6 trailer aerodynamics system reduces drag by more than 10%, translating into highway fuel savings of approximately 7%

UPDATED -- Officials with SmartTruck fired back at testing results announced a month ago showing trailer undercarriage air deflectors result in fuel savings far less than some manufacturers are claiming, releasing its own third-party research at the American Trucking Associations' annual convention.

Study: Fuel Consumption of New Trucks Can Be Reduced by More

Truck, engine and trailer makers already are investigating some of these fuel-saving technologies through the SuperTruck program.

Fuel consumption of new heavy-duty vehicles could be reduced by more than a third by 2025, according to the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, if the next phase of greenhouse gas/fuel economy standards pushes improvements in areas such as trailer aerodynamics and waste-heat energy recovery.
