Test Drive: Clarke-APG Dual-Fuel Glider

This Columbia sleeper-cab tractor looks new, because most of it is. The powertrain components are remanufactured. Daimler Trucks North America offers glider kits for most Freightliner and some Western Star models. The Wilson hopper-bottom trailer carries crushed lime.

By Tom Berg

From the ground and behind the wheel, you’d think this Freightliner Columbia is brand new. This was obvious on a run out on Interstate 70 in eastern Missouri, pulling a hopper-bottom trailer with a heavy load of granulated lime destined for an animal-food plant in Montgomery City, west of St. Louis. It rode, shifted and ran like new, and was just as comfortable.

LEDs Light the Way

Freightliner’s Cascadia is standard with custom-fit LED lamps. Truck-Lite is also making LEDs for International’s ProStar and Volvo’s VNL.

By Tom Berg

If you were in trucking about 30 years ago, you might remember the switch from incandescent sealed-beam headlamps to halogens, which were so much better that some truck operators stopped using auxiliary fog and driving lights. A more recent step up was projector-beam lamps, whose optics better aim the lumens from halogen bulbs and even more effectively light the way for drivers.

Truck Buying Options: New, Used, Buy or Lease

By Tom Berg

What’ll it be, buddy? New or used? Buy or lease? A salesperson could throw those questions at a prospective buyer and get a combination of answers, and none of them would be absolutely wrong. Because like everything in trucking, “it depends.”

Dual-Fuel Gliders: A Way to Get Into Natural Gas for Less Money

Technicians at Penn Commercial Vehicle, a WheelTime member based in Glenmore, Pa., assembled this Coronado daycab demo tractor from a Freightliner glider kit. It has an APG dual-fuel diesel-natural gas system and a Webasto coolant heater.

By Tom Berg

Dual-fuel glider kits are a relatively new alternative for fleets looking to tap into the benefits of natural gas but at less cost than buying a new, dedicated NG vehicle. A glider is a new truck without some powertrain components. Shops in the field add rebuilt or remanufactured engines, transmissions and rear axles.

Save Fuel, Increase Profit, Save the Planet

By Tom Berg

Is this a case of win-win? Do the new regulations limiting greenhouse gas emissions help both the environment and truck operators’ bottom lines? So it seems.

Class 8 Update: Economics Forge Change

Western Star:The flagship from Western Star, a Daimler Trucks brand, is the 4900 with 132-inch cab and hood and long sleeper that’s built for the highway but looks good in town. It and the shorter 4800 are also equipped for vocational work with forward and setback steer axles or twin-steer configurations. Just announced is a 4800SB 8x8 whose setback, driving steer axle is paired with Meritor tri-drive rear axles.

By Tom Berg

Is trucking in for a transformation? Many believe that long-haul trucking will become less important as regional operations grow and intermodal takes over more long-haul freight, and that will change the type of heavy-duty tractor bought by many trucking companies.

New Choices, New Excitement For Cargo Vans

Dodge Ram: Just going to market following production start-up in Mexico is the Ram ProMaster, a front-wheel-drive unibody design based on the proven European Fiat Ducato. FWD allows a low floor height with good traction and consistent driving characteristics, Ram says. Cab-chassis models and panel vans are available in 1500, 2500 and 3500 series with varying roof heights and wheelbases.

By Tom Berg

‘May you live in interesting times” is usually taken as a wry Chinese curse. But for cargo vans and the people who run them, an interesting era is here and it should be a blessing. New European-based products are being sent to the marketplace, and they’ll offer new efficiencies and choices in a segment that has languished design-wise since the first of that breed.

Brakes: Shorter Stopping Distances, Again

Tractors with gross-weight ratings of over 59,600 pounds, like this heavy haul model, are among those affected by FMVSS 121’s requirements for shorter stopping distances.

By Tom Berg

Coming up: another “non-event” for brakes? That’s what Phase Two of new federal stopping-distance requirements will be for truck operators, according to people we talked with. Stronger, higher-performance brakes on certain vehicles won’t even cost much more in most cases. But like Phase One two years ago, which was hardly noticed by truckers, Phase Two represents a lot of work for brake makers and truck builders.

Cargo Vans Update: Business thriving, though some casualties

By Tom Berg, Senior Editor

Like most commercial truck sectors, sales of full-size cargo vans and walk-in vans are thriving and even booming - but there are casualties. The electric truck business, while still viable, is taking a hit, with two suppliers in financial straits

Detroit Diesel's DD15 Debuts

By Jim Park

We're witnessing a huge change in the way trucks and engines come together. We saw it first with Volvo's D-platform engines (shared with Mack and Renault). We'll soon see International take a similar approach, sharing an engine platform between International trucks in North America and MAN chassis in Europe.
