QuickSpin: Using Eaton's Procision Dual-Clutch Transmission

Even on a 20% grade, the Hill Helper held the truck until the clutch engaged and the engine got the truck moving. On the downslope the clutch held the truck in gear until an upshift was necessary. It never coasted downhill.

The Cummins ISX 15 SmartAdvantage powertrain.

By Rolf Lockwood, Executive Contributing Editor

Test Drive: Detroit’s Smooth Self-Shifter

This Freightliner Cascadia Evolution is equipped with a Detroit DD13 diesel and smooth DT12 automated mechanical transmission. The van shown here was empty, so we swapped it out for a heavily loaded flatbed trailer for our evaluation.

“Proprietary” is a magic word among truck builders. It describes components of the company’s own manufacture or design that are installed on the company’s own trucks. For truck users, this can be a good thing, because they’re designed to work specifically with a company’s other components.
