Another phase of the I-20 reconstruction project in Alabama was set to begin at midnight, weather permitting resulting in about a 10-mile section of the route being closed.

The area is on westbound I-20, east of Birmingham, between the I-459 interchange and the I-20/59 interchange near the Birmingham airport.

The official detour will take traffic along I-20 westbound to the I-459 interchange in Irondale, north along I-459 to Trussville, then south along Interstate 59 to the I-20/59 interchange.

During a similar closure earlier this year heading eastbound, many drivers used U.S. 78 as an alternative route, but separate construction along the route isn’t expected to be finished until later in the week, with traffic lanes in the area currently reduced in some parts.

Expect the detour to lead to increased travel time and delays, especially during morning and evening rush hours.
