Two California trucking companies have agreed to pay a total of more than $6 million to the family of a truck driver killed in a 2011 crash.

A judge has accepted the settlement between JS Trucking and Reliable Trucking with the family of Gary Miller who died when his truck was hit head-on by a rig from JS Trucking. It was hauling trailers owned by Reliable Trucking, according to the Appeal Democrat newspaper. The crash occurred in the Marysville/Yuba City area, north of Sacramento.

In the criminal trial of the driver for JS Trucking, prosecutors said bald tires and improperly adjusted brakes led to the crash. He has since been sentenced to six months in jail and five years probation.

Reliable Trucking says it will now require proof of inspections from certified mechanics that brakes and tires meet safety standards before using contractors to haul its equipment along with daily inspection reports from these drivers.
