Last week, a tentative agreement was reached between the New York Shipping Association and a few local unions belonging to the International Longshoremen's Association, which serves the Port of New York and New Jersey.

The six-year deal addresses the regional issues that were not specified in the master contract agreement, which was reached last month after months of negotiations between the ILA and the United States Maritime Alliance.

The national agreement was reached on Feb. 1 after the deadline extensions had been pushed back twice. Local agreements still needed to be reached at each port, but unlike during the national negotiations, an East and Gulf Coast ports strike is no longer looming.
