Big rigs gained more freedom to travel throughout the state of Vermont on August 1.

The new truck routes, approved by lawmakers in May, allow rigs up to 72 feet in length on state highways without the usual $20 permit. This 72-foot limit accommodates units pulling 53-foot trailers, since they have become the industry standard. Rigs traveling on the truck network between 68 and 72 feet in length don’t need a permit at all, but will once they leave the network.
Truckers can get access to a map of the new routes at the state Department of Motor Vehicles web site at www.aot.state.vt.us/dmv/dmvhp.htm.
"The new truck network provides more freedom for trucks getting into companies and business," said Lt. Jake Elovirta from the DMV’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section.
