The Pennsylvania State Transportation Commission has adopted an updated 12-year program that calls for a $36.7 billion investment in highways and bridges, transit, aviation, rail freight and intermodal facilities.

State Transportation Secretary Bradley L. Mallory said the program, which was approved Thursday, takes full advantage of all funds available for transportation improvements.
Projects in the first four years of the plan total $14.3 billion, up from the $10.6 billion figure adopted in the last program in January 1999.
This is the second plan to be developed through Pennsylvania's "re-engineered" planning and programming process. The State Transportation Commission, PennDOT, the 14 metropolitan planning organizations and the six local-development districts gathered information from the public and worked together to set procedural and financial guidelines for the program.
