Alabama officials say they will six-lane a dangerous part of Interstate 20 east of Birmingham and add concrete median dividers over the next two years.

According to the Birmingham News, the state Department of Transportation plans to add lanes to 8 miles of I-20 just east of the Coosa River.
However, a 7-mile stretch between there and I-459 will remain four lanes, and St. Clair county officials told the paper that will create an unsafe bottleneck on an already unsafe portion of highway.
"I-20 now has more trucks per mile than any interstate I've ever traveled, and it's going to get much, much worse with industry coming in," said Ed Gardner, executive director of the St. Clair Economic Development Council.
I-20 will also be widened on the other side of Birmingham towards Tuscaloosa, where it is also I-59. About 40 miles of interstate will be widened to six lanes. Work is expected to begin within two years. Eleven people have died on this stretch of road in the past three years.
