Veteran drivers at Heartland Express can now earn up to 40 cents a mile. The company recently announced pay increases for company drivers that boost the mileage rate for drivers with one year of experience to 37 cents a mile, including a 1 cent safety bonus.
The company adds a half cent for every year of experience to a maximum 40 cents a mile for drivers with seven years on the road.
Heartland's current base pay for owner-operators is 85 cents a mile, including a 3 cent "fuel equalization" allowance to cover higher fuel costs. The company said this is paid to owner-operators whether or not Heartland collects fuel surcharges from shippers.
