Twenty-four former Mack union workers have filed suit against the company seeking their former jobs and damages, according to an Allentown, PA, newspaper, The Morning Call.
The workers lost their Mack jobs in 1989 when the company closed a plant in Allentown and moved work to South Carolina. When it began hiring in Allentown a few years ago it initially rehired some former employees but the suit claims it stopped after learning that, by law, pensions would have to be upgraded for those workers.
The 24 individuals in this case applied for rehire but were turned down. The suite charges that Mack's action was a "liablity avoidance" scheme with specific intent to interfere with employee eligiblity for enhanced pensions.
