During the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this week, Detroit Diesel announced record engine production for calendar year 1999.
1999 was DDC's best year ever, with total production exceeding 165,000 engines, according to Charles (Chip) McClure, President and CEO of Detroit Diesel. The company built more than 100,000 engines at its Redford, MI, facility and more than 60,000 units at its automotive operations in Italy and Brazil.
While Detroit Diesel is well-known for its truck engines, it expects its automotive diesel line, which accounts for approximately one-third of production, to grow. The company now offers a full line of automotive diesels, including in-line and V6 models, from 1.5 to 4.0 liters.
Detroit Diesel also announced the Society of Automotive Engineers has named DDC Powerplant and Off Highway Company of the Year.
