UPS expects to deliver its highest one-day package volume of the year today - nearly 18 million packages.

Dec. 17 marks the peak of UPS holiday season, the four weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The predicted global volume of nearly 18 million ground and air packages is more than 40% over UPS' average daily volume.
As expected, UPS is seeing a surge in e-commerce-related deliveries this holiday season. Shipments generated by online companies such as Gateway and Lands End have increased. As further proof of the increasing number of people using the Internet, UPS has received more than 2 million online tracking requests per day on its web site - double last year's record-setting figure.
To handle the blizzard of holiday packages, UPS supplements its 330,000 employees with 90,000 temporary workers and adds more than 3,000 trucks to its fleet of 149,000 tractor-trailers, vans and delivery trucks.
