J.B. Hunt will start installing the new Orbcomm/Vantage trailer tracking system on its fleet of more than 14,000 trailers this month.
The Vantage solution will let J.B. Hunt link trailer location and status information directly to its fleet management system through Orbcomm's low-earth-orbit satellite network. The fleet has been evaluating Vantage in a regional test of the system since December.
The trailer tracking system will detect when a trailer is connected or disconnected, if it is loaded or empty, as well as its position and other status reports.
As part of the agreement, the companies also plant to launch a joint development effort to implement a tracking system for J.B. Hunt's non-powered container fleet, which makes up about 50% of its entire fleet of 35,000. Testing of the container system is expected to begin early next year.
